大西洋に面した港町エッサウィラに、モロッコ各地からグナワのマアレム、世界の音楽家、研究者、作家、そして世界中の観客が集います。
今年で第27回を迎えるグナワフェスティバルは、単なる音楽祭ではありません。音楽。対話。学び。研究。伝統の継承。それぞれが交わる場でもあります。
私は10年以上にわたり、グナワのマアレム、ムカッデマ、家族、コミュニティと時間を共にしながら記録を続けてきました。このガイドには、その中で見えてきた視点も含まれています。
ここで扱うのは、出演者紹介や演奏レビューだけではありません。ステージ上の演奏だけでは見えないグナワも見ていきます。
Held every year in the Atlantic port city of Essaouira, it brings together Gnaoua Maâlems, musicians, researchers, writers and audiences from around the world.
Now in its 27th edition, the Gnaoua Festival is more than a music festival. Music. Dialogue. Learning. Research. Living heritage.
I have spent more than ten years documenting Gnaoua while sharing time with Maâlems, Muqaddemas, families and communities. This guide also reflects perspectives that emerged through those experiences.
It is not only about artist introductions or performance reviews. It also looks at aspects of Gnaoua that cannot be seen only through performances on stage.

Essaouira as a Port City, where the World Meets
大西洋に開かれた港町エッサウィラ。人、モノ、音楽、思想、文化の往来によって形づくられてきた街です。港は終点ではありません。出会いと移動の場所です。01章で見た世界とグナワの出会いも、この港町の歴史の中から生まれています。
Open to the Atlantic, Essaouira has been shaped through the movement of people, goods, music, ideas and cultures. Ports are not endpoints. They are places of arrival, departure and encounter. The encounters introduced in the previous section also emerge from this history of the port city.

Human Rights Forum
13回にわたり、Human Rights Forum はアーティスト、研究者、思想家、市民社会の声をエッサウィラに集めてきました。音楽だけでは扱いきれない問いについて考える場でもあります。
For thirteen editions, the Human Rights Forum has brought together artists, researchers, thinkers and civil society voices in Essaouira. It is also a space for reflection beyond music.
グナワフェスティバルでは、演奏だけでなく、学びのプログラムも行われています。マスタークラス、ワークショップ、教育機関との連携を通して、知識と経験が次の世代へ受け継がれています。
Educational programs also take place throughout the Festival. Through masterclasses, workshops and educational collaborations, knowledge and experience are passed to the next generation.

フェスティバルでは、Berklee College of Music と連携した教育プログラムも行われています。グナワは演奏されるだけではなく、学び、研究し、受け継がれる対象にもなっています。
Educational programs developed with Berklee College of Music also take place during the Festival. Gnaoua is not only performed. It is also studied and transmitted.

The Chair of Transitions / UM6P
モハメド6世工科大学（University Mohammed VI Polytechnic / UM6P）では、Institute for Advanced Studies（IAS） 内の The Chair of Transitions を通じて、グナワに関する研究活動が行われています。アフリカ的ルーツ、文化交流、歴史的循環、現代的表現。グナワは音楽としてだけではなく、文化、社会、継承を考える研究対象にもなっています。
At University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P), the Chair of Transitions within the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) develops research related to Gnaoua culture. Beyond music, Gnaoua is approached through African roots, cultural exchange, historical circulation and contemporary expressions.

Researchers, musicians and artists gather during the Festival to discuss Gnaoua beyond performance — as history, society, memory and transmission. The Festival is also a place to think about Gnaoua from multiple perspectives.

私は10年以上にわたり、グナワのマアレム、ムカッデム、ムカッデマ、家族、コミュニティと時間を共にしながら記録を続けてきました。演奏だけではなく、その外側にある日常、出会い、準備、継承の時間も記録しています。
I have spent more than ten years documenting Gnaoua while sharing time with Maâlems, Muqaddems, Muqaddemas, families and communities. My interest extends beyond performance to everyday life, encounters and transmission.

Gnaoua does not exist only on stage. It continues through families, communities and everyday life. The Festival is also a moment when parts of this living heritage become visible.

Gnaoua is not sustained by musicians alone. Maâlems, Muqaddems, Muqaddemas, families and communities all play a role in transmission.

This guide introduced stages, port cities, dialogue, learning, research and living heritage. For more than ten years, I have documented Gnaoua while sharing time with musicians, families and communities. From here, the guide also becomes a field note.
